new tricks

I know it's been a while since our last update so here's what's new. Maera is growing and learning new things every day. She's up to 6lbs 14oz now and is eating well from her bottle and nursing also. She sleeps fairly well at night. About 3-4 hour stretches before she needs to wake up and eat again. She's a very happy little baby when she's awake and loves to play with her toys and pull her sisters hair. Her newest trick is rolling over! Here's a short video of Marie-Claire helping her learn this new trick :)

Welcome home little Maera

On January 31st 2011 we were finally able to welcome little Maera home! She was born on September 30th at 23 weeks weighing 1lb 3oz 11.5in long. 4 months and a day later we brought our sweet little Maera home from the NICU weighing 6lbs 3oz 18in long!
We've been busy having fun and adjusting to live with an infant at home. The biggest challenge we are facing is feeding Maera. She has a very small appetite and would prefer to eat half of what she needs to grow. She is slowly gaining weight and learning to eat better. I am having to use the feeding tube less and less each day! Maera is also still on oxygen which is another minor challenge for us. It's not as bad as I thought it would be. We are so happy to have her home that we don't even care so much about all the medical equipment around the house.
Marie-Claire is a great big sister and is more of a help than I thought she would be :) Here are some pictures of our 1st week home.

She did it!

She finally is home! Can you believe it? After 4 months and 1 day, she's home. She weighs 6lb 3oz and is 18 inches long.

And we happen to have taken a few pictures.

Here's one for the gag reel (or horror fest, featuring the evil 3yr old doctor)

Status Update

We were really hoping that this would be the week we got to finally bring home our sweet little Maera. It was long and emotional but overall a good week. A lot happened and a lot of valuable information was gained through all of it. Maera passed her hearing test and car seat test with flying colors! I got the opportunity up stay at the hospital for 2 nights and have Maera in my room with me the whole time! This was a good test of what to expect when we come home with her. Unfortunately Maera is still having trouble with her feeding and could not gain (or even maintain) her weight with more nursing and less fortified breast milk bottles. She lost weight 3 days in a row and now needs to be 'fattened up' again. We are praying that she will be able to handle the new feeding plan put in place and that she will gain weight and start taking all of her feeds without having to be gavage fed. The discharge date is put on hold for now and we will reevaluate things on Monday. As much as we want her home now, we really want what's best for her and it looks like staying in the NICU a few more days is what she needs. We have been so blessed to have such wonderful doctors and nurses taking such great care of our sweet little Maera!

Two day sleepover

Just a quick update after so long. We're at the hospital 'rooming in' for two days to see how we all will do left nearly to our own devices but with help close at hand. She's off of all monitors with just Katie and I keeping her safe and sound. We're in a private hotel-ish room. Right now Katie's taking a nap with Maera on the trundle-bed (not 5-star accommodations, but she wouldn't trade this moment for any other in the world).

Maera has to eat enough and gain weight. Those are the only criteria for her coming home right now. That said, it's quite a challenge for her still so we're really hoping.

Status update

It looks like we're still playing the waiting game this week with little Maera. She had been doing great last week. She was off oxygen, holding her body temp, eating well and we were looking forward to finally bringing that beautiful baby home with us! Well...that was last week anyways. This week Maera is back on the oxygen and having a difficult time with her eating. She's using up all her energy eating and is having a hard time maintaining her oxygen saturation levels as well as her heart rate at times. We are still optimistic that she'll be coming home soon but it won't be quite as smooth of a transition as planned. It's not going to be anything like bringing a regular newborn baby home. She'll have oxygen and we won't be able to take her out much. Especially during the flu season. Please continue to keep our family in your prayers. It's been a long 3 1/2 months and I would really like to bring her home by the time she's 4 months old!
